Rabbi Simon Jacobson’s Advice for Getting High Without Drugs

I’ve always been fascinated by the insatiable human desire for pleasure and fulfillment. Seems that our bodies’ neural pathways are primed to seek and experience (often at the cost of our very lives) both. Humans have developed and used an array of methods to access higher planes of existential experience–the use of external substances, for better or worse, being a preferred pathway.

As relates to pleasure and fulfillment, my personal understanding is that pleasure is a short-term version of fulfillment. I define fulfillment as a long-term abiding sense of pleasure. This piece explores Rabbi Simon Jacobson’s idea that it is possible to “get high” and attain long-term blissed out states of human experience (fulfillment) without the inclusion of addictive drugs into one’s life.
