Let’s face it. Running can be hard, yet as children, we didn’t think twice about it. If we felt the urge, we sprang at will into motion. I remember as a young teen, neighborhood friends would come knock on my door and ask if I could come out and play ball. I greatly anticipated that door bell ring at 10 am on a Saturday because I knew I’d get the chance to move. The feeling of subjecting my body to extremely rigorous physical demands was exhilarating.

Around the time I was 14, heavily influenced by my new found infatuation with the martial arts and physical fitness, I developed a desire to see how far I could push my body. I wanted to be like Bruce Lee and the fit anime characters I grew up idolizing. Something about that world attracted me. While other kids my age were inside playing video games, I wanted to see how many push ups and pull ups I could do, how much weight I could lift, and yes, how far I could run.

The Start of My Running Habit

I started running without knowing what I was doing. I’d run my neighborhood from beginning to end and arrive back at my house out of breath, my body drenched in sweat.
