Preliminary Questions:

  1. If “Jewish” is a legitimate racial category designated as a proper noun, should we capitalize “white” and “black” as well? As in the White race and the Black race?

2. Are there differences and similarities between these three racial categories? If so, what are they? There are, for instance, White Jews and Black Jews. In addition, there are mixed people i.e. children of Black and White parents.

3. Does “Asian”, for example, refer to a race, a culture, or an ethnicity? How about “Hispanic”? European? In fact, insert any label you wish into these questions and see what your brain comes up with.

Maybe this is the right time in our history to try and sort this one out. On January 31, 2022, Whoopi Goldberg made some comments on her show, The View, regarding racial identity, cancel culture, and book banning in our country. She was subsequently banned from the show for her comments for two weeks.

Now before we get into this, I’m going to ask for two prerequisites. The first is that you bring an open heart and an open mind to this conversation. As you read, do not judge.
